FTP and 110mb.com

June 6, 2008

110mb.com doesn’t seem to provide a way to create an archive with your files, only decompress archives. It also doesn’t seem to allow you to copy files, only move them. The ftp program that comes with Mac OS 10.3.9 also doesn’t seem to be able to copy files around on the host. In fact, I’m fairly sure it’s not even part of the FTP spec. So that means that to make a copy of files, say to make a backup on the host, you have to copy all the files down, uncompressed, then re-upload them. And tell you what, downloading lots of small files using Transmit is really really really slow. It’s especially annoying when you don’t realise that DokuWiki comes with 41 languages. Where each language has lots of little small messages, each in individual files.

(Please tell me if I’m wrong! 🙂 )

However, I have been around long enough to know that working on a website without a backup is a Bad Thing. So I’ll be patient.
